Dean Gary Kiger

A LEGACY OF COMMITMENT

A friend of learning, a dedicated teacher and a loyal colleague; Gary Kiger, former dean of Utah State University's College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, died Monday, Aug. 11, of brain cancer.

A Faculty member at USU for 25 years, Kiger left behind a legacy or commitment that influenced multiple generations of students and faculty. Even in death, Kiger's commitment to filling minds with knowledge was evident through his family's wish that instead of honoring him with flowers, those who came to pay their respects should make a contribution to the Gary Kiger Scholarship Fund in the department of sociology, social work and anthropology – the department in which he taught and made a lasting impact for a quarter-century.

Consumed with a love of learning, Kiger earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Colorado in 1975, which was followed by a Master of Arts at McGill University in 1978 and in 1983 a doctorate from his original alma mater.

The same year he finished his schooling, Kiger began teaching scoiology at Utah State University, the place he would call home for the rest of his life. In 1985, Kiger married Deborah Byrnes. They are the parents of Elizabeth Byrnes Kiger.

While at USU, Kiger served as a faculty member, department head in sociology, social work and anthropology and as dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences for the last five years.

“Gary truly appreciated and respected the people he worked with,” Byrnes said of her husband. “I believe he would want to be remembered for making the college a nurturing and intellectually stimulating place where all people – students, colleagues, staff, alumni, and community members – felt valued for their ideas and contributions. He felt as a leader that he was there to serve the people in the college – to create and support an environment where others would and could do their best work. It wasn't about his ego.”

Besides being a knowledgeable academician, Kiger was a devoted husband and father, putting his family first.

More than 300 people attended his memorial service at the Logan Golf and Country Club.
